Awaiting my final tests. Should know Tuesday. Either way, the swimming truks are here and soon the feeble attempt to propel my mass through the medium of water shall begin!! _________________ Wiggy

I don't have diabetes, but I am in a bit of a mess.
I had a mild panic a few years back when I discovered that people with my own particular flavour of Cerebral Palsy tend to suffer from premature aging sometime around the age of 40.
I am 42, marching towards 43 and it seems to be happening.
I am in a fairly astonishing amount of pain... Well pain is not exactly the word to describe what I feel. There is pain, in my ankles and knees but there is also a kind of resistance to movement that is so, so exhausting. I drag myself along on my arms which in turn causes pain in my shoulders and neck.
You might argue that the fact I live in a three storey house to be fairly counter intuitive to making my life easier, and you would be right. However, here I am close(ish) to the kids, have family here, and I have a spare bedroom so the kids can stay over.
But all those stairs just hate me!
Anyway, the purpose of this thread is not to whinge on , and on about my so-called life. No! It is to document my doing something about it!
Walking is mostly out. I can do it, but it really hurts and a long walk (in Blewer miles... Not long to the rest of you) can leave me in bits for a couple of days, which is probably causing more damage than it fixes.
Cycling is not possible anymore, one of the outcomes of my divorce (hereafter referred too as Dumpfest '07) was selling my recumbent trike as the damned thing was nearly 12 feet long and I had no where to store it.
The Gym is vaguely pointless, as I cannot use many of the machines properly and the soul crushing boredom.. uhm, crushes my soul.
So all that is really open to me is swimming
So last night i went swimming and discovered two things... Unsurprisingly my decade or two of not swimming seriously has degraded my swimming skill to more of a barely not drowning skill, and I walk much easier when up to where my waist used to be in water. Bring on the global warming say I!
Today I ache and my left knee seems to be extremely annoyed with the rest of my body, but I feel like I have achieved something, even if it is only infinitesimal. Things can only get better
Right?
Right? _________________ Cheers

Right! Remember "Resistance is never futile!"
Oh and I don't mean resistance to exercise I mean resistance to getting older! _________________ Do everything in love. I Cor 16:14

| Okay so it's official, I've joined the Type II club. Okay, diet changed, and weight starting to drop. More exercise needed. |

Just got my orders to cut out fat and sugar, and exercise. Time to arrange some swimming methinks.
Now just one problem to deal with and I'll be thin, healthy, and depressed as hell!! _________________ Wiggy

According to the neighbors' scales, which are standard household ones, I appear to have lost around 2 stone (28 lbs or 12.7 kgs) over the last two and a half weeks due to swimming three times a week and eating less. The official weigh in with the nurse is next Wednesday at 0900. _________________ Wiggy

Yes, Dave. Things'll get better. You're doing the right thing, keep it up.
I too have Cerebral Palsy, mine's a mild case that affects both my legs. Though, I'm not quite you're age, I can definitely tell the difference exercise plays in making things easier. It really does help in terms of mobility, and stress when you engage in various activities, and I've no doubt it'll help with longevity as well, not only in the C.P. department, but in general health as well. I know its a pain in the ass sometimes, especially with the C.P., but it'll pay off. I know the problem I tend to face with keeping these sorts of regimens up is morale, so if you need an encouragement buddy, I'm here. Hell, all of the forum is here for you, and all the TAGers wanting to make healthy choices!

Excellent progress - not only will it help with the blood glucose/A1C levels, it will take an immense stress load off your legs. Each pound of weight = 2.5 pounds of stress when walking, so 28 lbs. = 70 lbs of stress of legs. This actually works a bit like bio feedback, since it makes it easier to exercise. Keep up the good work.
My own personal problem is, as you mentioned up thread, I am depressed about not eating what I want and enjoy. However, knocked off >70 lbs and kept it there for 2 years. Got kids to raise, so goota keep going. |

| If I may just wave my own flag a moment - I just hit the 28lb loss mark this morning too! And having noticed that Wiggy and I have been swimming in a 16.7m pool rather than a 12.7m (damn my speed reading!) our distance has been uprated from 800m to 1Km a session. No wonder the weight is dropping off. Only one question remains, Jimbo? Where are you? |

I was there on Wednesday and will be there again next wednesday! I took it easy first day as I did not want to overdo it. If this thaw continues, I will be back to my landscaping work again this weekend and I know from bitter experience that doing too much of that can lead to pain that lasts for weeks. Slow and steady to begin with eh what? _________________ I am a retro phrenologist. Here is my hammer. What personality would you like today? |
